This is the most frustrating and unrewarding of the Codex Alera novels. Though it lays down important groundwork for the instalments to come and is, in that sense, valuable, there is here a problem that plagues Epic Fantasy authors, particularly Robert Jordan. How do you fill in the time while your main characters grow into their roles? Mr. Butcher settles for a civil war which divides and devastates much of Alera. While this rebellion pays off much of the machinations from the first two novels, Cursor's Fury suffers from the absence of Tavi and Kitai who are the driving forces of this series.
Everyone loves a good supporting cast, but they are supporting cast for a good reason. They cannot, themselves, carry a story. Rarely has this affliction been more apparent than in this piece. (2/5 Stars)
