The Hallowed Hunt: Chalion 03 by Lois McMaster Bujold

From The Week of November 01, 2009

The Hallowed Hunt sends a strong signal that this will be the last of the Chalion novels for it rewinds to a time centuries prior to the events in the first two novels, relocating to a land south of Chalion where dark deeds and animal spirits go hand-in-hand, setting Ingrey, an agent of the realm, and Ijada, a murderess of one of the crown's royals, onto the path of shamanistic destiny. Though this tale treads on the more familiar Bujoldian ground of fantasy romance, there's still enough of the Chalion magic to make it worthwhile. Mind, the Hallowed Hunt is not for the squeamish. There are acts of devilry in this final story darker than any in the two that proceeded it. (3/5 Stars)
