Guns Of Normandy by George Blackburn

From the week of August 02, 2009

It is apropos that my notes begin here for I do not think there is a more raw, more personal account of World War II than that written by Mr. Blackburn, who shares here his experiences as a forward observation officer (FOO) in an artillery regiment of the Canadian army. The glory Mr. Blackburn earned for himself, fighting to liberate France from the Nazis in 1944, he lends to the reader by writing his account in the first person. The style drew me in like no other book, like one of the old Choose Your Own Adventure tales, only bloodier, truer, and without the option to bug out. A must read for anyone interested in the Second World War and/or the everyday pains and sufferings of a soldier in wartime. (5/5 stars)
